Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo - Invigorating and Luxurious, But is it Your Best Option?

I was told that when you approach perimenopause (around menopause) that things change mostly due to hormonal shifts that occur within the body. I'm not sure if its related, but I have found that my hair scalp is itchier/drier and that I have more pimples than I've ever had before as well. To combat the itchy scalp I've looked to different shampoos and found that the tea tree shampoo by Paul Mitchell is one of favorite options, however I did find a couple of drawbacks.

Using Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo, makes me feel like I'm getting a hair treatment. It does a great job at cleansing my hair and scalp without leaving it feeling dry. What I especially like is the tingle that I feel when shampooing. Comparing it to Jason Tea Tree Oil Shampoo, which is another brand that I looked at, I definitely appreciate the smell better with the Paul Mitchell brand. A couple of the major differences that I've found between the two are in the ingredients.

Both include natural products including tea tree oil, which comes from Australia and is widely known as a household antiseptic that functions as an antifungal remedy that can help those plagued by scalp itchiness and dandruff, among other things. Both worked effectively for me as far as scalp irritation relief and both resulted in that tingly feeling that I like.

As to their differences, there are several that I noted. The most obvious difference is apparent in the price point where Paul Mitchell's brand is a bit pricier than Jason's. Even with that being the case, I'm not sure if it's a deal breaker for me because I preferred the smell of the previous brand a bit more. It has lavender and rosemary in the ingredients, which I believe made the difference for me (tea tree oil is pretty fragrant itself and isn't necessarily pleasing if you're not used to it).

The other significant difference that I found was the sodium lauryl sulfate found in Paul Mitchell versus as in the sodium lauryl sulfoacetate found in Jason's. Some say that the latter is less irritating on the skin as it is derived from natural products, such as coconut and palm oil. However, that specific reasoning may not be quite on the money. The difference had perplexed me and I searched high and low to understand the true distinction between the two. I encourage you to search as well, but what I deduced was that the term "lauryl" in both names refers to lauryl alcohol which is derived from the fatty acid of coconut oil. So then what is the difference? The understandable difference that I did find between the two is that they are processed differently, with other chemicals being added to lauryl alchohol in sodium lauryl sulfate. Being a completely different compound, the size of the sodium lauryl sulfoacetate's molecules are larger and considered to be more mild and soothing, as they do not penetrate the skin (as with sodium lauryl sulfate).

So, while I was happy to understand that Jason Tea Tree Shampoo posed a true sulfate free option which was easier on the pocket book, I was disappointed that the better smelling and more luxurious feeling option differed on this point.
