How to Avoid Split Ends?

Split ends are really inevitable these days, especially if women are over-processing their tresses, using dye or bleach, using products that cause build-up or using heat styling tools that damage the follicles and the ends.

The scientific term for split ends is Trichoptilosis, referring to the splitting of hair fibers.

There is no true way to get rid of split ends unless you plan on simply cutting your ends off. But there are ways to make sure it is healthy and you prevent them in the future, say, after you get your regular trim or haircuts. You can cut off the strands that are split, but make sure not to cut off too much. It's also important to get trims regularly. This keeps the ends fresh and healthy as possible as your hair continues to grow in. The scheduling of these trims should vary on the hair type. Someone with dryer hair that is prone to damage would need more regular trims than someone who was not prone to dry hair.

Don't get fooled by those products that say they repair split ends. They may make it look healthier as it seals the split end, but this is no way reverses the damage of the strands. These products are often pricey and offer to fix the problem of split ends, when all they really do is seal the ends, not reverse the damage completely.

Chemicals are going to cause damage or even hair loss to some extent regardless of how many conditioning treatments and regular trims you do. So it's important to limit chemical use on your tresses as much as possible. Chemicals dry out your locks, making it weak and brittle - a perfect environment for split ends to form. Natural hair is the best way to go to avoid damage. Sometimes even chlorine can damage the ends so it's important before jumping in the pool to use a leave-in conditioner to avoid the chemicals damaging it. The water coming out of the shower head can even damage the hair - if you have hard water, see about getting a water-softener to protect your strands. Enough damage can cause you to look for hair loss treatments for your hair if it begins to fall out.
